The Barre des Écrins is the Alps' western- and southernmost peak with a height over 4,000m. It is part of the Dauphiné-Alps, a wild and rough region in southeastern France. The mountain's north face is covered by the mighty “Glacier Blanc” over which climbers usually ascent to the summit. There are no classic Alpine ski resorts around the mountain but La Grave in the north has become one of the centers for freeriding and extreme skiing in the Alps.
