The view of Cascade Mountain is a familiar sight for all visitors to Banff, Alberta, with the foot of the mountain almost reaching the city limits in the north. Pictures of Banff Avenue in the town center often show the mountain, rising up impressively in the background. As its contemporary name, the mountain's native name, “Minihapa” (“mountain where the water falls”), refers to the waterfall on the southern flanks. Among locals it is also known as “Stoney Chief”, in relation to the nearby mountain “Stoney Squaw”. Norquay Ski Area is a popular starting point for climbing the mountain.
