The Birnhorn is the highest peak in the Leogang Mountains and one of the 30 most prominent Alpine summits. It rises almost 2 000 meters above the valley of the Leoganger Ache in its south. The approximately 1 400 meter high south-east face of the mountain is one of the highest rock faces in the Eastern Alps, even being compared to the nearby east face of the famous Watzmann.
