Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain on earth, rises in the west of the Mahalangur Himal, the part of the Himalayas which is also home to Mount Everest, situated only 20 kilometers away. To the west of Cho Oyu is the Nangpa La pass at 5716 meters, which has been part of one of the most important trade routes between Tibet and Nepal for centuries. In 1954, an Austrian expedition with Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler and the Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama made the first successful ascent to the summit of Cho Oyu, without using supplementary bottled oxygen – an incredible mountaineering achievement.
