Dhalaugiri is the seventh highest mountain in the world and the highest peak which is not situated on a state border. The river Kali Gandaki flows between Dhalaugiri and the Annapurna massif in the east, making it probably the deepest river valley on earth. Dhalaugiri can be spotted from far away and was therefore already measured as early as 1808, as the hightest mountain surveyed so far. Only 30 years later Kangchenjunga in India took over its place. The first ascent of Dhalaugiri in 1960 was the penultimate ascent of an eight-thousander.
