Situated in the Graian Alps, the Gran Paradiso is regarded as the Alps' easiest four-thousander to climb. Many mountaineers prepare here for the challenge of climbing the nearby Mont Blanc. The first Italian national park which spreads around Gran Paradiso is named after the mountain. The park was established in 1856 to protect the endangered Alpine ibex.
