Kazbek is a five-thousander in the central Caucasus Mountains, on the border between Georgia and Russia. After Elbrus, it is the second highest volcano of the mountain range, making it one of the Volcanic Seven Second Summits. The iconic volcanic cone also plays a role in Georgian mythology. According to legend Amirani, a Georgian version of Prometheus, was chained to the mountain for stealing fire from the gods and giving it to the mortals. At an altitude of about 2100 meters stands Gergeti's Sameba, Georgia's only domed church in the high mountains.
