Less than 20 kilometers from Mount Everest, Makalu rises as the fifth-highest summit on earth, shaped like a four-sided rock pyramide. The peaks of Kangchungtse (or Makalu II, 7678 m) and Chomo Lonzo (7804 m) in the north are also part of the Makalu massif. The locals also call the mountain “Kumba karna“ (the giant). The first successful summit ascent was made by a French expidition in 1955, which approached Makalu from the north via the saddle between Makalu und Kangchungtse. Today this is the normal summit route. In the search for the legendary Yeti, the area around Makalu was a particular focus.
