Mauna Kea - “the White Mountain” - is the high point of the Hawaiian islands. It may even be considered to be the highest mountain on the planet if you measure the height from the mountain base below sea level to the summit, where Mauna Kea reaches over 10000 meters. The dormant volcano is over one million years old. On the mountain top, which is easily accessible, the Mauna Kea Observatory was built.
