Situated between the Eiger and Jungfrau, the Mönch completes the impressive triumvirate in the Bernese Oberland. From the mountain station of the Jungfraubahn it is just over 600 meters of ascent to the summit, which, however, involves some technical challenges. It was not until 1996 that subsequent measurements revealed that the mountain was nine meters higher than previously assumed. In the past, geldings, so-called “Münche”, were held on pastures on the meadows on the mountain. The “Münchenberg” then became the “Mönch”.
