Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano, situated in the Cascade Range near the US west coast. The devastating eruption on 18th May 1980 was the deadliest volcanic event in US history and claimed the lives of 57 people. A mountain slide on the northern flank caused the mountain to lose a good 400 meters in height. In the languages of the local native population Mount St. Helens is also known as Lawetlat'la (Cowlitz) and Loowit or Louwala-Clough (Klickitat).
