With a height of 14505 feet (4421 m) Mount Whitney is the highest mountain of the Sierra Nevada, California and the contiguous United States. The summit is less than 90 miles away from North America's lowest point in Death Valley (282 ft below sea level). The challenging Badwater Ultramarathon leads athletes over 135 miles from Badwater in Death Valley to Whitney Portal on 8360 feet (2548 m). Whitney Portal is the starting point for many climbers on their way to Mount Whitney's summit.
