Spitzkoppe is not the highest but probably the most famous mountain of Namibia. It is rising about 700 meters above the surrounding plains of Namib Desert. The isolated peak was formed through volcanic activity around 100 million years ago. Thanks to its pyramid-shaped summit it is also known as the “Matterhorn of Namibia”. The climbing season around the Spitzkoppe is in the winter months on the southern hemisphere, since the rocks are getting too hot during the summer.
