The Timmelsjoch, also known as Timmel, is a 2474-meter-high mountain pass that serves as a border between Austria and Italy, connecting the Ötztal with Passeier while separating the Ötztal Alps from the Stubai Alps. Its name originates from the Rhaeto-Romance word "tömbl," meaning hill, reflecting its historical use as a significant trade route utilized by traders such as the Fugger and Welser families. Since 1920, the border between Italy and Austria is running across the pass, and the Timmelsjoch Museum, built directly on the border, opened in 2010 to highlight the pass's history and significance.
