Our month names, however, come from Rome. And there the year long began in March: February was the last month, which is why it is still the shortest and carries the leap day. When Julius Caesar had the calendar reformed in 45 BC, the start of the year moved to 1 January. The names stayed, the counting shifted by two – and ever since, the last four months have carried the wrong numbers: September means “the seventh”, October “the eighth”, November “the ninth”, December “the tenth”. January, March, May and June are named after gods, July and August after Roman emperors. Around 800 AD, Charlemagne tried to replace the Latin names with Germanic ones: wintarmanod, brachmanod, herbistmanod, heilagmanod – names rooted in nature, weather and farming work. They never caught on. At the centre of the calendar, a year-round landscape shows what happened in each of these months in field, forest and pasture.

Your own year 2027

A large field for every single day leaves room for personal entries: birthdays and other celebrations, appointments, the ski trip, the next cycling tour or hike.
