The backbone of our map consists of contour lines at intervals of 250 metres. Thus, the map looks vivid and nicely illustrates the topography of the Alps. Besides, in order to give reference points, we show the important towns, roads, rivers and mountains, as well as the boundaries of the eight Alpine countries and their regions.
From France to Slovenia, from Germany to Italy we selected 222 special mountain pass routes. Legendary passes featured in the Tour de France or the Giro d'Italia, beautiful excursion and gallery roads and mountain passes which – sometimes for millenia – play a crucial role for the cross-Alpine traffic.
Our collection contains some of the highest Alpine mountain pass roads, such as Col de l'Iseran, Umbrail Pass or Stelvio. You can find mountain passes on some of the most important transalpine crossings, like Col du Mont-Cenis, Gotthard, Reschen, and Brenner Pass. Legendary climbs which gained a lot of their fame during visits of the Tour de France or the Giro d'Italia, like Alpe d'Huez, Col du Galibier, Grand and Petit Saint-Bernard. Scenic routes like Grossglockner High Alpine Road and mountain pass roads along some breath taking natural wonders, as in Gorges du Verdon or the Dolomites during the ascent to Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
For each mountain pass road we display the pass height, the lengths of the ascents, the height differences and the opening times for each month. In addition you can find information on the country, road type, toll roads and if a pass has been featured in the Tour de France and / or the Giro d'Italia.
If road access is not permitted for certain vehicle types it will be specified on the map.
222 Mountain Passes of the Alps was developed in cooperation with Marnix Heijerman. Originally from the bicycle country of the Netherlands, the passionate motorcyclist is now living in Germany, loves to travel through the Alps and is furthermore a huge fan of maps.
