Ama Dablam is occasionally called the ‘Matterhorn of the Himalayas’, yet this striking summit sets standards of beauty entirely its own. On the way to Everest Base Camp the mountain dominates the eastern panorama of walkers and mountaineers for a long stretch. Like the arms of a caring mother, or ‘ama’, its prominent ridges reach down from the summit. The glacier hanging between them recalls a ‘dablam’, a traditional pendant worn by Sherpa women. After Everest and Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam is the most popular mountain for climbers in the Himalayas. Unlike the highest mountain on earth, which is climbed mainly in May, autumn is the favourite season for ascents of Ama Dablam.
Mont Ventoux is a 1909-metre massif in the French Provence. Also known as the "Giant of Provence", it holds great significance for cycling. Although the mountain is considerably lower than the best-known Alpine passes, it is comparable in difficulty – not only because of the many vertical metres, but often also because of the heat of Provence and a merciless headwind over the final kilometres.
Piz Palü is a well renowned mountain for cineasts. The movie “The White Hell of Pitz Palu” from 1929 portrays a mountaineer looking for the dead body of his wife who was hit by an avalanche. The name is probably derived from the Latin word “palus”, meaning “swamp”. The mountain than was named after the pasture Alpe Palü which lies four kilometers east of the summit.
These three peaks of the Sesto Dolomites are a popular destination for mountaineers. It was here that many developments of mountaineering began, for example the discipline of sport climbing. Unfortunately, part of their popularity can be traced back to World War I. At the time, the area around the battlements was fiercely contested, the remains of which can still be found around the three peaks today.
Between the Splügen Pass and Chur, the Piz Beverin rises in the eastern Adula Alps. The relatively free-standing summit offers an excellent view. Besides walking paths, climbing routes of varying difficulty lead up the Piz Beverin, and the mountain is a popular ski-touring destination. The Beverin nature park surrounds it: alongside the ibex, the heraldic animal of Grisons, a wolf pack lives here too.
