The Spitzkofel is the second-highest mountain in the Lienz Dolomites and is often described as the local mountain of Lienz. It consists mainly of limestone and shale and towers unmistakably above the Lienz basin. At its foot, at 1902 m, lies the Kerschbaumeralm, the starting point for the ascent of the mountain, which was inaugurated in 1926 with far-echoing gun salutes.
