Nach dem Mont-Blanc-Massiv ist der Monte Rosa das höchste Gebirgsmassiv der Alpen. Der höchste Gipfel, die Dufourspitze, ist der zweithöchste Berg der Alpen und der höchste der Schweiz. Östlich davon, direkt auf der Grenze zu Italien, liegt der Grenzgipfel, der 4618 Meter hoch ist, und weiter im Süden die Signalkuppe (4554 m). Direkt auf ihrem Gipfel steht mit der Capanna Regina Margherita (Margheritahütte) das höchstgelegene Gebäude Europas.
