Mount Wrightson in southern Arizona is the highest peak in the Santa Rita Mountains, south of Tucson. It was named after William Wrightson, who was killed in the Battle of Fort Buchanan 1865 by Apaches. In contrast to the much more massive Mount Lemmon, north of Tucson, Mount Wrightson has a characteristic pyramid-shaped top. It can be reached fairly easily with a 11 to 14 mile hike. Once at the summit one is rewarded with the best view over the area, overlooking much of southern Arizona and over the border to Mexico.
