Wheeler Peak is the highest mountain in New Mexico, situated in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost Rocky Mountains subrange. First known as Taos Peak, the mountain was renamed in 1950, after George Montague Wheeler, a cartographer and explorer. Only 15 miles southwest skiers can enjoy the slopes of Taos Ski Valley.
