Mount Elbert

Mount Elbert

Mount Elbert is the highest mountain in the Rocky Mountains and in Colorado. It is also the second highest peak in the contiguous United States after Mount Whitney. In spite of these facts it is one of the less famous mountains in the Rockies and among the US state high points. It is named after Samuel Hitt Elbert, who was governor of the Territory of Colorad from 1873-1874, two years, before Colorado became the 38th US state.
