The Alps, built from six animals

From Nice to Vienna, the Alpine arc stretches 1,200 kilometres across seven countries. On this map it is formed by its own inhabitants: marmot, brown bear, ibex, chamois, golden eagle and Alpine salamander lie back to back and together make up the shape of the mountain range.

Each animal stands where it is genuinely at home. The marmot in the French Western Alps, the brown bear in the Swiss central section, ibex and chamois in the Central and Northern Alps, the golden eagle over Austria, and the Alpine salamander in the damp south-east towards Slovenia. Look closely and you read the map twice: once as a picture of animals, once as geography – with national borders, cities and seas from Geneva to Ljubljana.

How are our prints made?

We have been drawing mountains since 2015.
Every print is illustrated by hand, and we write and check the texts ourselves.

In the illustrations, we pay attention to perspective and to landmarks that stand for a place, making it easy to recognise. For Alpine passes, we show tunnels or sights along the route, such as the Courchevel altiport at the Col de la Loze.

It is important to us that the texts convey the information and the atmosphere of a route accurately. We use AI for preliminary research, error checking and translation. People carry out the essential steps.
