Mount Giluwe is an eroded shield volcano that last erupted over 200 000 years ago. Situated in the Bismarck Range it is the second highest mountain of Papua New Guinea and the highest volcano in Australia and Oceania, making it one of the Volcanic Seven Summits. Mount Giluwe has two summits, with the secondary peak in the east also reaching a height of 4 300 meters. The mountain can be climbed via trekking routes. When choosing the equipment one should prepare for low temperatures at higher altitudes and at night.
