The Untersberg is located southeast of Bad Reichenhall, as the northernmost mountain range of the Berchtesgaden Alps. The German-Austrian border runs along the vast summit plateau. With 1972 meters the Berchtesgadener Hochthron is its highest peak. The entire mountain range is undermined by karst caves. Germany's deepest and longest cave and the only accessible ice cave are both located here. On the northern slopes of the massif the well-known Untersberg marble is being quarried since Roman times.
