Großer Priel is the highest point of the Totes Gebirge. The summit is situated in the northeastern part of the mountain group, in Upper Austria. Due to its location, the mountain is clearly visible from the foothills of the Alps in the north and east, as for example from the state capital Linz, at a distance of about 60 kilometers. In 1870 an eight meter high summit cross was erected on the Großer Priel. In 2009, a year after a severe thunderstorm severely damaged the cross, a replica was placed on the mountain top.
