North of Mount Ruapehu, the highest mountain on New Zealand's North Island, the volcanic cone of Mount Ngauruhoe rises. With an estimated age of about 2500 years it is the youngest and also the highest summit of the Tongariro volcanic comlpex. The surrounding Tongariro National Park was formed in 1887 as New Zealand's first national park. In Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings-movies Ngauruhoe is presented to a worldwide audience as Mount Doom in Mordor.
