The Großer Krottenkopf is situated in Tyrol, south of the Bavarian town Oberstdorf. It is the highest point of the Hornbach Chain and the highest summit of the entire Allgäu Alps. The normal route to the Krottenkopf leads from the Alpine club hut Kemptner Hütte via the col Krottenkopfscharte, about 300 meters below the summit on the southern ridge of the mountain.
Der Große Priel ist die höchste Erhebung des Toten Gebirges. Der Gipfel befindet sich im nordöstlichen, oberösterreichischen Teil der Gebirgsgruppe. Durch die Randlage ist der Berg aus dem Alpenvorland in seinem Norden und Osten weithin sichtbar, so etwa aus der ungefähr 60 Kilometer entfernten Landeshauptstadt Linz. 1870 wurde ein etwa acht Meter hohes Gipfelkreuz auf dem Großen Priel errichtet. 2009, ein Jahr nachdem ein schweres Gewitter das Kreuz stark beschädigte, wurde eine Nachbildung auf dem Berg aufgestellt.
Der Große Rettenstein ist der markanteste Gipfel der Kitzbüheler Alpen. Seine felsige Gipfelpyramide ist eine imposante Erscheinung. Sie ragt aus den umliegenden Grasbergen etwa 400 Meter markant hervor und wird auch als „Kitzbüheler Matterhorn“ bezeichnet, obwohl der Berg gerade einmal halb so hoch ist und nur von Norden aus eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit dem berühmten Schweizer Namensgeber hat.
The Großer Widderstein, situated in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, is part of the Allgäu Alps and the highest peak of the Kleinwalstertal and the Southeastern Walsertal Mountains. When making a summit attempt one might cross the path of ibexes. It is still disputed though whether the name of the mountain refers to a male ship or an ibex, both being called “Widder” in German. South of the mountain lies the municapility of Warth. Its ski area Warth-Schröcken has been connected with the area Ski Arlberg since the winter of 2016 / 2017, thus making it Austria's largest ski resort.
The Großes Wiesbachhorn is often seen as the most beautiful three-thousander and a rival to the Großglockner. Even though the mountain is part of the Glockner Group its upper part is quite isolated and allows for a spectacular view of the Fusch valley 2400 m below. The first ascent of the Northwest Face in 1924 is of major importance for Alpinism since for the first time ice nails were used, which were later further developed into ice screws, still being used today.
With a height of 3798 metres the Grossglockner is Austria's highest mountain. Its topographic isolation of 175 kilometres makes it one of the most dominant summits in all of Europe. The view of the summit from the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is famous and has been fascinating mountaineers, hikers and travellers for centuries. The first successful ascent to the summit by Prince-bishop Salm-Reifferscheidt-Krautheim was a major achievement in the history of Alpinism. The Grossglockner or Glockner is Austria's highest mountain and one of the most prominent mountains on earth. The view of the summit still fascinates people today. The name of the mountain is probably derived from its bell (German: “Glocke”) -like shape. Besides the first successful summit ascent in 1800 fron Heiligenblut the ascent via the southwest ridge (Stüdlgrat) from Kals, made by the merchant Johann Stüdl, was one of the mile stones in the climbing history of the Grossglockner. Today more than 20 routes with varying difficulties lead to the summit from both Tyrol and Carinthia. This mountain print shows the view of the Großglockner from Tyrol. On the Großglockner High Alpine Road, the saying “the journey is the destination” is to be taken literally. The road is far more than an ordinary car link between the Austrian federal states of Salzburg and Carinthia; it is also a tourist attraction and a natural spectacle. Following its course takes you through the Hohe Tauern National Park in the middle of the high Alps, with sections at altitudes of up to 2500 metres. In the spring and summer months there is also a good chance of spotting Alpine marmots, which are numerous in the area.
The highest summit of the Austrian state Salzburg lies on the border to Tyrol and is the high point of the Venediger Group, the westernmost mountain range of the High Tauern. The Großvenediger's characteristic summit is determined by its glaciers and the prominent ridges, running along towards all four cardinal points of the compass.
The Grünten is known as the Watcher of the Allgäu and is located south of Kempten, near the fringe of the Alps. During the Middle Ages the Grünten had already been climbed for the first time and a large deposit of iron ore was discovered. From the 15th to the 19th century many mining tunnels were dug. The iron ore production required large amounts of wood and the forest clearings on its slopes gave the Grünten ist name, since in the local dialect it simply means “bald head”.
The Gspaltenhorn is part of the Bernese Alps and rises up to 3436 m. The mountain rock consists mainly of limestone which gives the surface a cliffy and cragged shape. The name comes from the German word “gespalten”, meaning “split” or “cleft”. For climbers the Gspaltenhorn offers multiple routes to the summit with varying degrees of difficulty.
Südlich der deutsch-österreichischen Grenze ragt der Guffert mit seinem felsigen Doppelgipfel empor. Der freistehende Berg ist vom Tegernsee aus prominent sichtbar. Mit abwechslungsreichen Steigen und leichten Kletterstellen ist er ein beliebtes Ziel für Tagestouren. Vom Gipfelplateau aus erwartet einen ein weitreichender Blick über die Bayerischen Voralpen, das Wettersteingebirge, das Karwendel sowie die Hohen Tauern.
Gunnbjørn Fjeld ist der höchste Berg Grönlands und die höchste Erhebung nördlich des Polarkreises. Der ist nach Gunnbjørn Ulvsson benannt, dem ersten europäischen Entdecker Grönlands. Als Teil der Watkins Range erhebt sich Gunnbjørn Fjeld an der Ostküste der Insel. Aufgrund der abgeschiedenen Lage werden nur selten Aufstiegsversuche unternommen. Die erste nachgewiesene Besteigung gelang einer britischen Expedition 1935. Erst über 35 Jahre später, 1987 wurde der Gipfel zum zweiten Mal erreicht.
Half Dome is a prominant rock tower in Yosemite National Park. Its impressive northwest face rises almost 1500 meters (5000 feet) above Yosemite Valley. The mountain is a very popular photo motif as well as a paradise for climbers. While Half Dome was declared absolutely inaccessible for humans in 1865 only ten years later George Anderson was the first to reach the summit after successfully climbing the rock wall. In 1957 the first grade VI climb in North America was achieved at Half Dome.
In the east of Val Badia the summits of Sas dla Crusc rise into the sky. For Alpinists the mountain offers a broad range from easy to the most difficult routes. West of the summit the chapel Santuario di Santa Croce and the mountain refuge Hospiz dla Crusc are situated, which were both named after the mountain. The Sas dla Crusc is mentioned much earlier, for instance in the Ladin legend of the Kingdom of Fanes.
Helgoland is almost 50 kilometers away from the mainland. In its history, the small island often changed state affiliation. It is famous for its red rocks where seabirds breed.
Helvellyn in the Lake District is the third highest and one of the most famous mountains in England. Its 500 meter long summit plateau is particularly striking. In 1926 even a small airplane successfully managed to land on it. On the steep and rocky east face of the Helvellyn, two ridges diverge and enclose the mountain lake Red Tarn. The southern Striding Edge is a popular route for easy climbing and scrambling. Additionally the summit can also be reached by mountain bike.
Südlich des Tegernsees erhebt sich der Hirschberg mit seinem Hauptgipfel im Westen und dem etwa 15 Meter niedrigeren Vorgipfel im Osten. Trotz der vergleichsweise geringen Höhe ist der Berg von Norden her weithin sichtbar und grüßt die Bewohner der Region im bayerischen Voralpenland. Der Gipfel ist über verschiedene Wanderpfade erreichbar und bietet eine hervorragende Aussicht, die bei gutem Wetter vom Rossstein über die Zugspitze bis zum Großglockner reicht.
Im Nordosten von Meran erhebt sich der Hirzer als höchster Gipfel der Sarntaler Alpen mehr als 2 000 Meter über das Passeiertal. Die touristische Region ist gut erschlossen, was auch den Aufstieg auf den Hirzer vergleichsweise einfach macht. Die Hirzerseilbahn befördert ihre Passagiere auf eine Höhe von 1980 Metern. Von der Bergstation führt die Normalroute über die Hirzerhütte zum Gipfel. Rund um den Hirzer befinden sich die für Südtirol typischen Waalwege, die einst zur Bewässerung der Apfelplantagen angelegt wurden.
Die Hochalmspitze ist die höchste Erhebung der Ankogelgruppe. Während der Großglockner oft als König der Tauern bezeichnet wird, gilt die Hochalmspitze, auch aufgrund ihres weiblichen Artikels, als Tauernfürstin. Das passt zu ihrem weissen Gletscherkleid, das sie unterhalb ihrer langen Grate umgibt.
Der Hochfeiler (ital. Gran Pilastro) ist der höchste Berg der Zillertaler Alpen und liegt an der Grenze zwischen Österreich und Italien. Er hat zwei sehr unterschiedliche Seiten. Vom Schlegeisspeicher fällt der Blick auf eine eisige und abweisende Nordwand. Wer sich dagegen aus dem Pfitschertal von Südwesten nähert, sieht auf die Flanken des Hochfeilers, die sich hier vergleichsweise sanft in Richtung Tal ziehen.
The Hochfrottspitze is the highest mountain on the German side of the Allgäu Alps. Trettachspitze, Mädelegabel and Hochfrottspitze form the famous triumvirate of peaks. The cliffy wilderness on the south side used to be called “Frut”, from which the mountain probably received its name. Inhabitants of nearby Oberstdorf also call the mountain one of the three Trettach peaks.
Der Hochgall oder Collalto ist ein Grenzberg zwischen Österreich und Italien sowie der höchste Gipfel der Rieserfernergruppe – ein stattlicher, trapezförmiger Klotz mit einem markanten Gipfelgrat. Der Berg bildet einen Lückenschluss zwischen Hohen Tauern, den Zillertaler Alpen im Westen und dem Tauferer Tal in Südtirol. Demzufolge ist er aus Österreich oder Italien besteigbar.
Der Hochgolling ist der höchste Berg der Schladminger Tauern und der gesamten Niederen Tauern. Die wuchtige Felspyramide mit den markanten und steil abfallenden Graten erhebt sich über dem Untertal und dem Lesachtal und zieht sich somit vom Bundesland Salzburg im Westen hinüber in die Steiermark im Osten. Blickfang des allseits steil abfallenden und durch dunkles Gestein geprägten Berges ist seine rund 1 000 Meter hohe Nordwand.
The iconic and local mountain of Oberstaufen is the highest peak of the Nagelfluhkette and of paramount importance for both tourism and geography. The aerial lift Hochgratbahn takes you up to about 125 metres below the summit. On the mountain slopes one can find many Alpine pastures. The Hochgrat mountain run is one of the sportive highlights in the district of Oberallgäu.
Der Hochiss ist der höchste Gipfel der Brandenberger Alpen und liegt auf dem Hauptkamm der kleinen Rofangruppe, einer Untergruppe der Brandenberger Alpen in Tirol, welche östlich des Achensees liegt. Der Name Hochiss leitet sich vom Dialektnamen „Iss(e)“ ab, was Weideplatz oder eine Hochweide bedeutet.
Obwohl er häufig im Schatten seines berühmten östlichen Nachbarns Watzmann steht, ist der Hochkalter im gleichnamigen Bergmassiv einer der höchsten Gipfel Deutschlands. An seiner Nordseite befindet sich mit dem Blaueis der nördlichste Alpengletscher. Noch etwas weiter nördlich befindet sich der Zauberwald voller Felstrümmer. Dieser entstand vor etwa 4000 Jahren bei einem gewaltigen Bergsturz am Hochkaltermassiv, durch den auch der Hintersee aufgestaut wurde.
Hochkönig is the highest mountain massif of the Berchtesgarden Alps south of the German-Austrian border and one of the most prominent peaks in the Alps. The massif appears especially impressive seen from the south. The summit is covered by the “Übergossene Alm”, a glacier which has shrinked severely over the last decades.
Der Hochschwab ist der höchste Berg der Hochschwabgruppe in der Steiermark, östlich des Gesäuse Nationalparks. Die Hochschwabgruppe ist ein überwiegend vegetationsloses und verkarstetes Plateaugebirge. Das Plateau fällt nach Süden hin mit einer steilen, etwa 300 Meter hohen und zwei Kilometer breiten Wand ab. Typisch für ein Karstgebirge sind auch die Höhlen, die sich durch das Massiv ziehen.
Hochtor ist der höchste Berg der Ennstaler Alpen in Steiermark. Vom Ufer der Enns am Rande des Nationalpark Gesäuse ragt das Hochtor fast wie ein Dolomitengipfel auf. Gute Kletterfähigkeiten sollten all jene haben, die durch die 900 Meter hohe Nordwestwand zum Gipfel wollen. Auch die Normalroute vom Johnsbachtal im Süden ist nicht ganz einfach und erfordert Schwindelfreiheit und Klettergeschick.
The Hochvogel is not the highest mountain of the Allgäu Alps, but one of its most iconic and best-known summits. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view from the top. To the east you can see Wetterstein and Karwendel, to the south the view takes you up to the High Tauern. In the west the Swiss Alps with Säntis and Tödi show and in the north you can see the Black Forrest and the Swabian Jura.
Der Hochwanner auf der Grenze zwischen Bayern und Tirol ist Deutschlands höchste Erhebung außerhalb des Zugspitzmassivs. Mehr als 1400 Meter fällt die eindrucksvolle Nordwand Richtung Reintal ab. Die Erstbesteigung erfolgte 1870 über die heutige Normalroute von Süden aus Tirol. In den Sommermonaten hat man während des Aufstiegs gute Chancen, auf hier ansässige Murmeltiere zu treffen. Oben angekommen bietet sich schließlich eine tolle Aussicht auf die Nachbarberge wie die Alspitze im Norden oder die Mieminger Kette im Süden.
The Höfats, also known as “the Matterhorn of the Allgäu”, is the Allgäu's most characteristic grass mountain. Ascending the four, almost equally high summits is very challenging, due to very steep grass and schrofen faces. The reward is a unique flora, which has no resemblance anywhere else in the Allgäu. In 1911 a protected area for plants was established around the Höfats. The edelweiss, which had been almost extinct, can nowadays be found again, in clusters of 30 blossoms and more.
Die Hohe Veitsch, der höchste Gipfel der Mürzsteger Alpen in der Steiermark, liegt östlich des Mürztals und westlich des Aflenzerseebergs und der Rax. Es handelt sich um ein ganzes Massiv, das sich mit seinem langgestreckten Plateau von West nach Ost zieht. Eine Bergbahn gibt es hier nicht, doch der Weg auf den Gipfel ist – etwas Ausdauer vorausgesetzt – recht einfach.
Die Hohe Warte (ital. Monte Coglians) liegt auf der Grenze zwischen Kärnten und Friaul-Julisch Venetien in Italien. Sie ist die höchste Erhebung der Karnischen Alpen und bildet mit ihren Nachbargipfeln Kellerspitzen, Kellerwarte, Seewarte und Kollinkofel ein eindrucksvolles Massiv. Am besten kommt man auf den Gipfel von der italienischen Seite über das Rifugio Marinelli.
Hoher Dachtsein is the highest mountain of the Dachstein Mountains and also the highest peak of the Austrian states of Upper Austria and Styria. The mountain's south face is famous for its steep cliffs falling down about 1000 metres. The aerial tramway Dachstein-Südwandbahn takes you from Ramsau in Styria to the southern part of the Dachstein massif. For the construction of the lift a part of the subpeak Hunerkogel was blown up in the 1960s.
