Broad Peak is the second highest eight-thousander in the Gasherbrum group. To the southeast of K2 rise the north, middle and main summits. The long summit ridge of the mighty mountain reminded the British namesake William Martin Conway of the Breithorn in Switzerland, so he simply translated its name into English. In 1988, the Polish mountaineer Maciej Berbeka became the first person to climb to an altitude of over 8000 meters in winter when he ascended Rocky Peak, also known as Broad Peak's “False Summit”, at 8028 meters.
