Ony very few people have reached the summit of Jirishanca, the “hummingbird beak of ice”, so far. The rock pyramid rising in the Cordillera Huayhuash is also known as the “Matterhorn of the Andes”. Toni Egger and Siegfried Jungmair from Austria were the first people to climb to the summit in 1957. Their chosen route via the northeast face was only successfully completed one more time in 1969. In the same year the first successful summit attempt via the west face was accomplished.
