With an altitude of 2642 m, the Col du Galibier is the fifth highest asphalt road pass in the Alps. The pass in the Western Alps is one of the absolute classics in the Tour de France programme. At the same time, it has a lot to offer in terms of scenery. A large part of the route runs through high alpine terrain resembling a lunar landscape. The Galibier also forms a climatic border between the more humid northern Alpine climate and the dry Mediterranean climate on the southern side.
