Gasherbrum II is the third and lowest eight-thousander in the Gasherbrum group. The mountain with its striking summit pyramid rises southeast of K2 and Broad Peak and is thus situated in the center of the group. In the 19th century, Gasherbrum II was initially referred to as K4 (Karakorum 4) by the British. Since Gasherbrum III (7946 m) in the west has a topographical prominence of less than 500 meters it is usually considered as one its secondary peaks. Until the first ascent in 1975, it was one of the highest unclimbed points on earth.
