Spitzkofel is the second highest summit of the Lienz Dolomites often seen as the local mountain of the town of Lienz. The mountain is mainly made of lime and slate. It rises up prominently over Lienz and the Drava valley. At the foot of the mountain on 1,902m the mountain cabin Kerschbaumeralm is the starting point for summit attempts. It was opened in 1926 with salute shots which still could be heard from a large distance.
