As the lowest eight-thousander Shishapangma is the fourteenth highest mountain on earth and the only peak over 8000 meters, lying entirely within China. The first ascent only took place in 1964 making Shishapangma the last eight-thousander to be climbed. North of the mountain is the Tibetan Plateau which explains the name that can be translated as “mountain overlooking the grassy plateaus”. The Indian name Gosainthan, which used to be more commonly used, means “Holy Place” or “Place of the Saints”. Both particularly impressive and challenging is the mountains south west face, falling over 2000 meters.
