Situated in the Ethiopian Highlands, Ras Dashen is the highest mountain of Ethiopia and the tenth highest summit on the African continent. The mountain top consists of seven rock peaks. The exact height of Ras Dashen is disputed. Its official height is 4533 meters, even though later surveys measured a height of 4550 meters. Since the summit of Ras Dashen can be reached fairly easy, it is assumed that it was climbed very early. The first ascent by a European was recorded in 1841.
